Kangana Ranaut feels Deepika Padukone’s role in Padmaavat was Irrelevant; reveals director telling her, “Heroine ka role sirf itna hai ki…”

Kangana Ranaut has recently expressed her thoughts on Deepika Padukone’s portrayal in the film Padmaavat, labelling the character as irrelevant. She pointed out that Deepika’s character primarily spends the film preparing herself, rather than being involved in the narrative.

In a conversation with Abhijeet Bharti, Kangana Ranaut revealed that she was initially offered the role that Deepika Padukone ultimately played. However, she declined after finding the part to be insignificant. Kangana recounted her interaction with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, “Mujhe Padmaavat bhi offer hui thi. Toh maine unse pucha tha ‘sir aapki jo script hai, wo mujhe mil jayegi to achha hai.’ Unhone kaha ‘main kabhi script nahi deta.’ Maine kaha ‘toh sir heroine ka role kya hai?’ Kehte hain ‘heroine ka role sirf itna hai wo usko pehli baar mirror mein dekhta hai, aur wo taiyaar ho rahi rehti hai.”

(I was also offered Padmaavat. So, I said, ‘Sir (Sanjay Leela Bhansali), if I could get the script of your film, it would be great.’ To this, he replied, ‘I never give scripts.’ Then I asked, ‘What is the heroine’s role?’ He said, ‘The heroine’s role is simply that the hero sees her for the first time in a mirror while she’s getting ready.’ When I watched the film, I realized that the heroine is indeed just getting ready throughout the movie, and he was right).
